Overview of The Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a large island, especially for the Caribbean. It occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola, or Isla Espanola (the Spanish island), with Haiti having the western third.

To give you a sense of size, the Dominican Republic is about the size of the state of Maryland in the US or a little larger than the country of the Netherlands. With that much land area it is not surprising that the country is quite diversified in geographic terms. Large valleys with lakes are surrounded by mountains rising to 9,000 feet (3,175 meters) and 1000 miles (1,600 km) of coastline with over 200 miles (300 km) of beautiful sandy beaches

To the southeast you will find Santo Domingo, the capital and the first city of the "New World".  It offers some great historical sites and dining/nightlife as well as the largest of the Dominican airports and the best medical facilities in the country. Santo Domingo is a treasure featuring old and elaborate colonial architecture; the fortresses, palaces and churches here date back hundreds of years and can be seen on a typical walking tour.

Traveling east of Santo Domingo you come to the famous white sand, palm lined beaches of Punta Cana. The best beaches are located on the eastern shores and boat trips go from here to nearby islands where the diving and snorkeling is spectacular.

The North Coast, aka the Amber Coast, of the Dominican Republic provides vacationers the beautiful beaches in Puerto Plata, Sosua, and Cabarete.  Cabarete is a windsurfing and Kiteboarding mecca, reportedly one of the best places on earth to enjoy these popular water sports.

Santiago in the north is Dominican’s second city and also worth a visit, while the interior of the country is one of diverse landscapes. The center, or interior area, of the island is home to "Pico Duarte" - the highest mountain in the entire Caribbean.  Hikers love this area and it should be mentioned that the Dominican Republic actually has four mountain ranges within its borders.

Rivers, mountains, lush valleys, beautiful beaches….the Dominican Republic really has it all. No wonder that so many people fall in love with this island country and return year after year.
