Car Rentals
Dominican Republic car rental agencies can be found in the usual places such as hotels, airports and city location. Most large, international car rental companies are represented along with numerous small, local companies.
Rates will vary quite a bit so shop around. Essentially there are two ways to go; large car rental companies, where you pay more but have better service and fewer potential problems with maintenance and insurance, or, the smaller local car rental companies where the rates may be cheaper but the experience perhaps a bit more “adventuresome”.
Accidents. Be sure to take out the extra insurance coverage, it can prove quite worthwhile. Roads are typically in good repair in major, well trafficked areas but easily transition into rough, pothole littered car traps in the blink of an eye. As in the states, if you get in a minor accident collect the other persons information, i.e. name, license plate, driver’s license number, address, insurance company, etc.. Then take it to the nearest police station. If the other driver will accompany you there, all the better. |
To rent a car in the Dominican Republic is fairly easy. You will need a valid driver’s license, a credit card and be at least 21 years of age. Most likely, you will also need to leave a deposit of $200 or more. This due in large part to the questionable condition of some of the roads. Don’t forget to buy the extra insurance, it can save a lot of hassle if something does go wrong.
Driving is on the right side, as in the US. Cross island times can run 3 -4 hours while most regional trips will be in the 30 minute range more often than not.
Tip: Traffic policemen will sometimes stop fair skinned drivers on a traffic “violation”. A gift of $5-$10 usually sees you on your way. Remember, this is just how things are done here so go with the flow.
